How to Travel Solo

If you’re planning your first solo trip, congrats! Traveling solo can be scary, especially the first time, however if you follow my recommendations below, you will ensure a safe and memorable trip.

Location, location, location:

  • Decide on a destination that you feel comfortable and confident exploring on your own. Everyone has different comfort levels when it comes to travel and it's important to acknowledge and respect your own boundaries. For some, this may mean avoiding destinations where English is not widely spoken, whereas others may prefer to steer clear of busy cities. Making the right location choice will ensure a more enjoyable and stress-free solo travel experience.

  • Before your trip, familiarize yourself with the local culture, customs, and language to feel more comfortable and confident during your travels. It can also be helpful to familiarize yourself with the area you are staying.

Stay Safe:

  • Keep loved ones informed of your travel plans and regularly check in with them. Share your itinerary, accommodation details, and contact information in case of emergencies.

  • Listen to your gut instincts and trust your intuition while traveling solo. If something feels off or unsafe, remove yourself from the situation and seek help if necessary. Also, be cautious about who you tell that you’re traveling alone.

Be Flexible and Open-Minded:

  • Solo travel provides an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and embrace new experiences. Be open-minded and willing to try new foods, activities, and cultural traditions.

  • Solo travel provides the freedom to be spontaneous and change your plans as you go. Embrace flexibility and be open to unexpected opportunities and adventures that may arise during your journey.

Embrace Your Solo-ness

  • One of the best parts of solo travel is the opportunity to meet new people. Strike up conversations with locals and fellow travelers to gain insider tips, recommendations, and insights into the destination. (Expert tip: when dining out, sit at the bar, even if you don’t drink, as it can really help you meet other people).

  • Take advantage of the opportunity to spend quality time with yourself. Solo travel offers a chance for self-reflection, personal growth, and discovering more about yourself and the world around you.

Remember to stay safe, stay curious, and most importantly, enjoy the journey! 🌍✈️
